CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE FUTURE OF ENERGY
Professor Christian Azar (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden)

Now seen as one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, the issue
of global climate change has moved to the top of the agenda of
politicians and business leaders. But how serious is the problem
really? And how can technology help? In this lecture, Christian Azar
will explore the world of global climate change, the workings of the
greenhouse effect and its discovery, the efforts of researchers to
understand the problem, and the possible consequences of continuing on
our current course. Weighing the merits and hidden dangers of
solutions such as renewable energy, fuel efficiency, nuclear power,
and carbon dioxide capture from fossil fuels, he asks how far we are
willing to go in order to meet this challenge. Are our politicians
sufficiently motivated to impose the regulations needed to reduce
emissions? What roles will be played by corporations and individual
citizens? Can we together take control of the climate?

A physicist by training, Christian Azar is a Professor of Energy and
Environment at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. His research
focuses on strategies for mitigating climate change, including energy
systems modeling, technology assessment, and policy analysis. He
serves on the editorial board of several international scientific
journals and has published one hundred scientific papers and reports
on energy, climate and the environment. A lead author of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Azar has given hundreds of
lectures on energy, sustainability, and climate change to policy
makers, business leaders, parliaments, government committees,
environmental organizations, and the general public. He has recently
served as a member of the former Swedish Prime Minister Göran
Persson's commission against oil dependency as well as of the Swedish
Government's scientific council on climate change, and has worked as
an advisor to EU Commissioner for the Environment Margot Wallström. He
is currently a member of Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's
Sustainability Commission.

ASEAN'S HUMAN RIGHTS MONITORING SYSTEM IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
Dr. Jonas Grimheden (Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Lund University, Sweden)

ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has committed
itself to establishing a body for promoting human rights. While human
rights monitoring mechanisms exist in most regions of the world,
ASEAN's is one of the first to be created in the Asia-Pacific region.
In this lecture, Dr Jonas Grimheden examines the process of creating
the new ASEAN body. Focusing on the efforts of policymakers to draw on
the experiences of their counterparts in Brussels and New York, he
addresses three key questions. How will ASEAN's human rights body
work? How does it compare with other human rights bodies, both within
Asia and around the world? And is it a step towards a stronger
globalization – universalization – of human rights, or is it a step
backwards? Drawing on the history of human rights monitoring in
Europe, Africa, and the Americas, Grimheden offers a fresh,
comparative perspective on the development of ASEAN's human rights
body.

A specialist in international law, Jonas Grimheden is Deputy Head of
Research at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, an academic institution
based at Lund University that promotes human rights and humanitarian
law. He has previously served as director of the Institute's China
office, and has published widely on human rights, international
monitoring, and Chinese law. Grimheden's extensive teaching and
research experience includes visiting positions at Cornell University
Law School, China University of Political Science and Law, Copenhagen
University Faculty of Law, and the Human Rights Academy at The
American University, Washington.

DEMOCRATIC ISLAM AND GLOBAL ORDER
Professor Mattias Gardell (Faculty of Theology, Uppsala University, Sweden)

The landscape of political Islam has undergone a profound
transformation in recent years with the rise of a liberation theology
premised on the view that democracy, human rights, and social justice
are inherent to Islam. Renouncing violence and censorship, and calling
for equality and freedom before the law, its advocates now pose a
major challenge to a social order that they see as materialistic and
unjust. How should we understand these new formations? In this
lecture, historian of religion Professor Mattias Gardell, examines the
intellectual history of the Islamic Democrats, from the anti-colonial
activists involved in the Islamic Renaissance milieu to its
breakthrough as the focus for popular aspirations for another,
alternative world. By revitalizing a democratic discourse within the
political philosophy of Islam, he argues, Islamo-democrats have
succeeded in emerging as the main contenders for power throughout the
Arab world and elsewhere.

Mattias Gardell holds the Nathan Söderblom Professorship of
Comparative Religion at Uppsala University. He has written and taught
extensively on the history of religion, race, and politics,
particularly in the United States. A frequent public speaker and
debater, his numerous publications in English include In the Name of
Elijah Mohammed: Louis Farrakhan and The Nation of Islam (Duke
University Press, 1996), The Pagan Revival and White Separatism (Duke
University Press, 2003), and The Quest for an Islamic State:
Globalization and the Rise of Political Islam (Duke University Press,
forthcoming) .

JUST WAR AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF GLOBALIZATION
Dr. Edda Manga (Department of History of Ideas, Uppsala University, Sweden)

Since President George Bush, Sr. used it to describe the Gulf War in
1991, the term "just war" has made a dramatic return to political
discourse as well as to the academic disciplines of political science
and international relations. But why did Bush choose to invoke the
concept of "just war" instead of international law when the Gulf War,
unlike more recent American interventions, already enjoyed the legal
sanction of the United Nations? And why does the "just war" appeal so
strongly to those who assert the legitimacy of military interventions
today? In this lecture, historian of ideas Dr Edda Manga examines the
writings of Francisco de Vitoria, a sixteenth-century theoretician
whose ideas about just war have profoundly influenced the emergence of
the modern concepts of international law and human rights. Only by
recognizing the origins of the concept of "just war" in the context of
Spanish imperialism, she argues, can we properly understand the
political premises and historical resonances of present-day calls for
"just wars".

Edda Manga is Assistant Professor at the Department of History of
Ideas at Uppsala University, where she is researching the relation
between colonialism and contemporary political thought. She has
published widely on racism and multiculturalism, critical thinking,
and the postcolonial history of ideas. This lecture is based on her
forthcoming book, 'Guerra justa y expansión colonial: Francisco de
Vitoria y los fundamentos juríricos de la globalización (Just War and
Colonial Expansion: Francisco de Vitoria and the Judicial Foundations
of Globalization) '.

GLOBAL TRANSLATIONS: LITERATURE OF THE SOUTH, MARKETS OF THE NORTH
Dr. Stefan Helgesson (Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala
University, Sweden)

The South writes, the North reads: this is one aspect of an uneven
global literary exchange. For many African, Asian, and Latin American
writers, success in Europe and North America has compensated for small
domestic readerships and a lack of publishing opportunities at home.
Yet accounts of this phenomenon typically focus on a single region or
linguistic network, such as the Latin American "boom" or postcolonial
literatures in English. In this lecture, translation specialist Dr
Stefan Helgesson draws on an array of authors from around the world in
order to map the transcontinental circulation of literature between
regions and languages. Combining stylistic analysis with publishing
data, he reveals the ways in which writers of the South and
translators of the North, more than just participants in a global
literary industry, have become agents of literary change able to
challenge the dominant models of originality and authenticity.

Dr Stefan Helgesson is an Associate Professor at the Department of
Comparative Literature, Uppsala University, and has previously worked
at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His areas of
research include southern African literature in English and
Portuguese, postcolonial theory, theories of world literature,
translation, and Brazilian literature. His current research project
"Inventing World Literature" focuses on translations of writers from
Africa and Brazil, and documents the ways in which translation
functions as an aesthetic paradigm in the writings of these authors as
well as in subsequent translations of their work. Helgesson's most
recent book is Transnationalism in Southern African Literature
(Routledge, 2008), a study of the literary cultures of Johannesburg,
Maputo, and Luanda since the Second World War.
